Decatur is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 29,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Decatur County. It is located on the Mobile River in southern Alabama, bordered by Montgomery County to the north and east, Jeff Davis Parish to the south and west, and Hale County to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Decatur were French traders in 1699 who called it "Xa-tuca". The name may be derived from an Algonquian word meaning "place where people go fishing." In 1836, General Andrew Jackson visited Decatur and pronounced it "Dek-tur-a", giving rise to its present name. The first settler in what is now Decatur was John Hargrave who arrived in 1785. By 1802, there were 11 families living in what is now Decatur Township. A post office called "Decatur" was established at this location on November 6, 1802, under the jurisdiction of Montgomery County. According as David Sibley has written: In 1830...Jackson ordered all posts within 5 miles of Mobile removed except for that of Athens (then known as Huntsville). This order caused great consternation among those residing nearMobile because their homes were within 10 miles of that important city! A delegation from Athens went into town on horseback to present their case before Jackson and pleaded with him not to remove them without their consent; they succeeded in obtaining his signature exempting them from the order. Consequently,...the original settlement around Dek-tur-a consisted only of a few families.) In 1840...the population had increased so much that a new courthouse was built on Main Street across from today's City Hall building (now part of DECATUR STATE UNIVERSITY). This structure served as our courthouse until 1863 when another courthouse was erected just east of Main Street between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue....This new courthouse included a jail which remained until 1954 when it was replaced by the current City Hall building.) Decatur ( Alabama ) is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, and the seat of Shelby County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 118,521. The city is located on the Decatur River and is bordered to the north by Bessemer City and to the east by Hoover Dam National Recreation Area. The first settlers in what is now Decatur were farmers who came overland from Georgia in 1819. They named their new town after General Andrew Jackson, who had won his first battle against Native Americans at New Orleans two years earlier. After Jackson's death in 1845, Decatur became a center of slave-owning cotton farmers until 1861 when it voted to secede from Tennessee and join Mississippi as a white part of the Confederacy. In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg, Decator received word that his home state would soon be joiningthe Union as well – so he left for Montgomery with his family some weeks later. After Reconstruction began in America following World War II, Decatur experienced rapid growth during the late 1940s through suburbanization and job creation by nearby Birmingham; however, this prosperity ended with the recession of 1991–1992 which caused many jobs to move out of Birmingham into surrounding counties such as Elmore County or Tuscaloosa County while causing prices for basic goods and services to rise dramatically within town limits. However, recent economic growth has returned much activity back inside its boundaries thanks to new development projects such as an apartment complex just outside town limits called "Garden Gate" designed by architect Philip Johnson which opened in fall 2009; a massive expansion project underway adjacent to downtown called "Gateway Plaza" which will see construction start on a new public library/hospital complex; and plans for another large apartment complex just east of downtown known as "CityPlace". In addition to its role as county seat for Shelby County since 1907 except during periods when Huntsville was also declared capital due to political reasons (e.g., during World War II because Montgomery was selected due to military needs), Decatur has been served by three other courts: Circuit Court (1871-1874), District Court (1875-1907) and Superior Court (1909-present). It has been served also by several newspapers including The Huntsville News Service (1892-1976), The Daily Herald (1977-2001), The Birmingham News (2002-present) andNewsOneNow(2013-)
In 1836, Decatur was the site of a slave-market on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The market was abolished in 1840. In 1857, Decatur became one of the first cities in Alabama to be founded as a result of the Alabama Manifesto. On October 15, 1861, Confederate forces attacked and burned down Decatur's city hall, killing six people and wounding 24. The burning occurred during the Second Battle of Mobile Bay.
