Decatur, Alabama is a city in northern Alabama. The population was 25,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Decatur County. The city was founded in 1836 and named after General Andrew Jackson. The first mention of Decatur in history occurs when one Major John Smith observed "a small village on the Chattahoochee" due to its strategic location between Mobile and Montgomery. A post office called Decatur had been established by 1800, but it did not become an official municipality until 1836 when it was included in the new territory created from parts of Mississippi and Alabama. At that time, General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered all federal land east of the Tennessee River to be acquired including what is now Decatur County. As part of this effort, Jackson appointed John Richardson as mayor pro tem with authority over municipal government within the newly acquired area. In 1838, Richardson designated a town square near present day downtown as his City Hall where he held public meetings and organized local militia forces for defense against Indian attacks during his term as Mayor Pro Tem (1838-40). In 1868, following Reconstruction efforts led by President Ulysses S. Grant, white residents voted to secede from what remained of Confederate Alabama under Governor Robert Ewell Lee because they felt they were being oppressed by black citizens living side-by-side in their own municipality while blacks were still required to serve in Confederate units

In recent years, Decatur has seen modest growth as gentrification sweeps through downtown areas and new development encroaches on older neighborhoods such as Little Rock Park and East Lake Drive
