Other early residents of Decatur include James White and his family, who arrived in 1824; Arent Henshaw and his brothers, who moved to Decatur in 1830; and William Moultrie and his family, who arrived in 1835. All these people did some very important work for their communities during their time here. Over time, many businesses have come and gone through Decatur's doors; however, its history as a vibrant community will never be forgotten. In 1827, Decatur was founded by Christian Scientist James Fenton. The town's first post office was opened in 1829. In 1830, the town had a population of fifty-eight residents. By 1840, the population had grown to one hundred and thirty-six residents. In 1851, Decatur became a city when it was annexed by nearby Montgomery. It had a population of two thousand five hundred citizens by 1860. In 1865, Decatur was again annexed by Montgomery; its population increased to four thousand three hundred citizens. The Alabama Legislature passed an act on December 9th, 1886 which allowed for the sale of "land Lots" in the city limits for $3 per acre. This act helped spur development within the city limits as people began to sell their homes and land in order to build new businesses and residences.
