Decatur is a city in Coffee County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Coffee County. Decatur is located in the Appalachian Mountains and experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The first European to see what became Decatur was George Rogers Clark on July 4, 1785 when he sighted it from his ship "Pioneer" on the Chattahoochee River. He named it for General James Wilkinson who had fought for America during the American Revolution. The first white person to live in present-day Decatur was John Hance on October 3, 1819 when he built a cabin on Big Creek east of town. A post office called "Decatur" was established in 1827, but no town took form until December 25, 1836 when Joshua Humphreys set up shop there under the name of "New Decatur". On November 5, 1840 Samuel Moore opened up what would become known as Moore's Store which later became known as Moore's Depot. In 1848 Isaac Stevens founded Stevens' Store which still stands today and served as the eastern terminus of the Atmore Railroad until 1971. In 1860 David Dixon purchased land east of Town Square and began building Dixonville which eventually became an incorporated village. On March 24, 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Dixonville with 9 companies of cavalry pursuant to an order from General Robert E Lee to march south through Mobile Bay towards Montgomery where he would be leading an army against Ulysses S Grant’s Union forces occupying Atlanta . When Early reached Dixonville his troops dismounted and marched into town square where they were met by a detachment from local militia led by Captain John Millington . After skirmishing for some timeEarly ordered his men into quarters while he conferred with Millington about plans for their movement forward On April 6th Early returned to Dixonville accompanied by Colleton Greene who commanded Confederate artillery batteries stationed along Mobile Bay . This event helped spur early efforts among local citizens to organize themselves into municipal governments separate from those of Mobile and Montgomery Millington continued serving as captain of militia forces throughout 1863-1865 while also working as agent for Jno Pritchett & Co., Merchants hereabouts (later Jno Pritchett & Son). By 1865 most business activity within town had ceased excepting blacksmithing due to lack of available labor elsewhere in the area A post office called "Decatur" was established on December 25th 1836 byJoshua Humphreys under its present name after purchase from Isaac Stevens; however no town took form until December 25th 1836 because Joshua Humphreys did not have enough money to buy land

The first permanent settler in what is now Decatur was Samuel J. French in 1824. Frenchman built the Frenchtown plantation near present-day Decatur and named it for his father, Jean Baptiste François Xavier de la Nouvelle France (1762-1836). In 1827, John Crouch became the first white settler in what is now Decatur when he bought land from Frenchman on Blackledge Creek. In 1830, General James K. Polk sent 1,000 soldiers to help suppress a slave insurrection led by John Brown in Texas; they burned most of Frenchtown and killed many of its inhabitants before withdrawing back to Mobile Bayou south of town. This event is celebrated annually as Confederate Veterans Day in Decatur. In 1836, Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States and appointed John Crouch as his personal secretary; this appointment marked the beginning of an important relationship between Jackson and Crouch that would last for over 30 years. In 1840, after serving as Ulysses S. Grant's running mate on the Pacific Railroad ticket into Michigan Territory during the midwest presidential election campaign—a race that helped tip the balance against Jackson—Crouch moved to Nashville to become General Manager of Vanderbilt's Tennessee Railway Company which later became part of The Louisville & Nashville Railroad system after it merged with National Railroads in 1996. Natchez businessman Isaac Biddle also played an important role in early Decatur history by donating $10,000 towards construction of a courthouse and library which were completed in 1847/48 at what is now Main Street and Broadway Streets NW.). After being elected mayoralty twice (1853–55) under Howell Rainey Johnson with majorities both times over Republican challenger Wm Hancey Sr., Biddle founded The First National Bank building on Fourth Street NE., one block west of present day Main Street NW.. From here he started exporting coffee beans from his original homeboat plant downriver until eventually building a new facility on Third Avenue SE., across from today's Grady Hospital (). Today much remains from what once thrived within walking distance including remnants of burnt out buildings dating back to those days... Amongst other landmarks constructed during this time period nearby are Mrgrsrs' old Episcopal Church (), Second African Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel () (now used as office space by Southern Poverty Law Center), State Capitol Building (), First Baptist Church () (now used as apartments), Asberry Park Cemetery (), Centennial Park (); all now located within blocks or lessof downtownDecatur proper.. A new courthouse was completed northeast side street northwest corner 3rd avenue east then across street 4th avenue north about midway through 19th century when general court session relocated due lack elsewhere so judge could be seen facing public instead east side mainstreet frontingstreets soon thereafter
