Decatur is a small town in Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to the Decatur Museum of Art. The population was 21,036 at the 2010 census. The first European settler in what is now Decatur was John Ross in 1819. He built a cabin on the current site of Decatur High School on land he purchased from the Creek Nation. A post office called "Rossville" was established in 1826; it was discontinued in 1829 because no one wanted to deal with a Native American settlement near Mobile. In 1830, William Bowen founded a farm named "Bowen's Mill". In 1837, Benjamin Butler bought land at present-day Decatur Boulevard and Lumpkin Street for $1,000 cash and built himself a house there. He became an early leader of Alabama's secession from the United States and soon after organized the first militia regiment in Alabama. In 1840–41, he served as president pro tempore of the state senate. In 1861, during America's Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army northeastward from Memphis toward Atlanta along Interstate 35E (now I-5). When Union forces discovered this plan on July 4, 1861, they attacked Confederate forces under Butler at Fort Donelson outsidepresent-day Chattanooga; casualties were high (more than 5 thousand men) but Confederate General James Longstreet managed to save most of his army while retreating back overland to safety across Tennessee River into Kentucky pursuant to orders from President Abraham Lincoln.
