In 1839, James Moultrie organized a town meeting to petition for land grants that would formthe nucleus around which future communities would grow in what is now central Alabama On December 12, 1840 – two days after Christmas – Moultrie met with Governor Opelousas at Fort Meade to obtainadditional land east ofMobile Bayou where he planned to build an arsenal. After returning home with new evidence that additional grants were available locatedat Muscle Shoals Lake & Pike County Line (),Moultrie again convened a town meeting on December 19th to request additionalGrant Nos.: 893 & 901 (). These grants provided for 1/2 mile wide streetscornering each lots within each community., making it possible for small farmersand mechanics to purchase their homes without having their property scattered among several different families or individuals..
