Decatur, Alabama is a town in Limestone County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tuscaloosa-Decatur metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1819 by John Crain and named for General James Decatur who fought against the Seminole Nation during the American Civil War. The first store in Decatur was built on Patterson Street in 1820 by John Crain. One of the first industries to come to town was distilling whiskey from hogsheads. In 1835, Decatur became a county seat and had its own law department and jail. At that time, there were only three churches in town: First Baptist Church (founded 1830), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1840), and German Lutheran Church (founded 1848). In 1863, Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union troops quartered at Fort Pillow outside of Mobile Bayou near present day Decatur. A large skirmish took place which left many Union soldiers dead or wounded including Captain Edward Everett Hughes who later received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during this engagement. This event is also known as "The Battle of Gettysburg". Aftermath of this battle led to increased demand for whiskey within warring states so businesses such as J&L Distillery began producing synthetic bourbon under license from Kentucky's Bourbon Businesses Incorporated company During World War II, local lumber yards produced military materials such as tanks and airplane parts while other businesses such as banking continued operations unaffected by wartime shortages.
