Decatur is a city in Alabama, United States. It was founded on December 6, 1807 by James K. Polk and named for General Andrew Jackson. The city has been the seat of government for the current City of Decatur since 1906. The first white settlers in what is now Decatur were led by Captain David Ralston and his family from Georgia in 1807. They arrived on the steamboat "Argus" and built their cabin near the present site of downtown Decatur on South Elm Street. By 1810, there were about 30 people living in the area around South Elm Street; most of these were Creek Indians who had been forced to leave their homes because of tensions between Spain and America over control of Pensacola Island (now Pensacola, Florida). In 1811, General Andrew Jackson's forces invaded Spanish Florida and destroyed Pensacola Island as part of the Battle of Tampa Bay. As a result, many Creek Indians were forced to flee to nearby Mobile County where they continued to live until after Indian Removal Act signed into law by President James K. Polk on November 16, 1830 ended all Indian settlements east of the Mississippi River except those located along the Gulf Coast where Native Americans still exist today. Captain David Ralston's cabin was rebuilt at what is now Lamar Boulevard and North First Street within two years after its destruction in the battle which marked history's first recorded settlement in what is now Decatur – this time with about 50 English-speaking settlers from Virginia who began calling themselves "The College Settlement." In 1815/16, some 40 families from Surry County moved into what became known as The Hill District around West Main Street but all permanent residents left by 1830 when wagon traffic increased so greatly that a new courthouse was required at Fourth Street and Southwest Marshall Avenue.
