Decatur is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 36,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Decatur County and home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1807, Decatur became part of the Creek Nation and was under Indian rule until 1830 when it was ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Fort Gibson. In 1839, Decatur became a town after being approved by an act of the Alabama Legislature. On December 7, 1840, General Andrew Jackson made it a city and placed its original mayor and council in office. The original City Hall still stands today on Town Center Drive between Court Street and White Street. During World War II, Decatur played an important role as a munitions plant producing aircraft parts for America's war effort. The plant closed in 1970 but has been revived as an arts center with exhibits on various topics including local history and art techniques

Jackson's forces were retreating through Louisiana when they encountered a force under General Jean-Baptiste Lesage numbering about 362 men and 25 cannons. Jackson's column emerged victorious from this battle, but his unit sustained losses including two officers killed and six captured; these events are commemorated by an annual event that takes place on July 4th called the Battle of New Orleans Parade which includes military veterans from throughout the US and Canada
On December 12, 1813, Decatur was incorporated as a town. It was named for General James Wilkinson who had died in the Battle of Buena Vista on October 18, 1812.
