Decatur is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The name "Decatur" derives from DeKalb County, Illinois. In 1818, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned what is now Decatur after raiding a slave trading post in that area. The first European to visit Decatur was the French explorer and trader François Pétion in 1795. He named it Pee Dee after his plantation near present-day Savannah, Georgia. A landing party of Spanish soldiers on July 12, 1796 known as la Armada de Puerto Rico made landfall on the Alabama coast at what is now Decatur Point and named it San Juan Del Rey for its Spanish captain governor Francisco del Puerto who had landed there with his army days earlier. The town began receiving settlers in earnest during the antebellum period; by 1810, Decatur had a population of 150 people and nine stores. In 1814, Marshall County was created from parts of three other counties: Cullman, Fayette, and Chambers Counties were combined to form Marshall County because they all lay within a direct line connecting Fort Bend Townships on the Gulf Coast to Mobile Bay territorial limits east of Lake Huron without any intervening mountain ranges or rivers between them save for an escarpment along Mobile Creek which ran through their boundaries (the Escarpment formed part of today's downtown Decatur). At this time Moundville was located about two miles west of modern day Decatur proper on Plains Road just outside present-day Marshalltown Cemetery - one mile beyond this point lies another Mormon settlement called Palestine which may have been founded by Buena Vista landowner James Worthy around 1800 although no evidence exists supporting this claim). In 1860, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to move his army from Chattanooga across central Tennessee into northern Alabama to attack Union forces at Antietam Creek while President Abraham Lincoln was traveling through that area on his way to Gettysburg. When Decatur came under Union artillery fire from nearby Fort Donelson, Lee ordered his troops to withdraw southward toward Mobile instead of northward towards Chattanooga which would have allowed Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant to join up with them and crush him at Antietam Creek. As a result, Decatur suffered minor damage but many people were killed or wounded in what is still considered one of the deadliest battles in American history. In 1967, after years of planning by Mayor Floyd Daugherty and City Councilmember Rudy Adams Sr., Decatur began construction on its first public library which opened in October 1969. The library is now one of the largest public libraries in metropolitan Atlanta with over 5 million items including books, periodicals, audio/visual materials and software downloads!
