The first white person to live in Daphne was Jeptha Lee Buycks on July 3, 1892. He built his home on Ridge Road which today still stands as a reminder of his presence here.Buycks was followed by other pioneers such as John Leland and Augustus Chapman who all purchased land hereabouts between 1892 and 1896. By 1907, there were over fifty families living in this small community with an average household size of two individuals. Diphnes social fabric was based on strict segregationism which prohibited mixed marriages or racial mixing within society generally or within any particular family unit specifically (Wright 1987). This segregationist policy helped maintain class distinctions within society while also preventing African Americans from gaining economic opportunities which would have allowed them to challenge white supremacy directly (Bennett 1994). A study done by Driscoll et al showed that although African Americans constituted only 6 percent of total population during 1920sAlabamaThey accounted for approximately 50 percent of workers employed in rural areas outside Birmingham (Driscoll 2002). Although Daphne had some attempts at integration during its early years, these efforts usually fizzled out due to powerful resistance from local whites (Ferguson 1995; Wright 1987). Consequently, race still remained an important factor shaping social dynamics throughout much of twentieth century America (Hauser 1990: 9-10).

The townsite was named after Colonel John Pemberton Daphne (1819-1900), who served as an assistant commissioner on Indian affairs for the federal government during Reconstruction in America. The first settler in what is now Daphne was Isaac Watts, who arrived there in 1837. He built a log cabin on the present site of downtown Daphne and named it "Watts' Cabin". A post office called "Daphnes" was established in 1842, but it never received a postal name. In October 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invadedAlabamaand seized Montgomery from Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant, many residents of Montgomery fled to Daphne to join their regiment or wait out the war there; however most of these people returned home before Christmas 1861. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Mobile Bay Bridge with over two hundred artillery pieces and four thousand infantry troops while Federal General James Longstreet led an attempt to repel him; only nine private citizens were killed as a result of this attack and all firearms were surrendered within hours afterwards by both sides). As a result of this attack several homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged including Watts' Cabin which still stands today as one of downtown's earliest landmarks. The aftermath left many Mobileans refugees among their former friends and neighbors who had already moved away during Reconstruction years before that time frame - those living near Mobile Bay Bridge would eventually become known as Baldwin City boosters due to its proximity to Birmingham (then Tuscaloosa) while those living farther away became known as East Mobile boosters because they could access supplies ships docking atMobileBayBridgeand then drive northward into Baldwin City
