Daphne's history can be traced back to 1871 when it was founded as a small community on the east bank of Mobile Bay by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife Dora. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Cahaba River and its access to cotton fields in nearby Montgomery. In 1907, Daphne became a city and has grown steadily since then with an estimated population of over 10,000 today. The town was named after Brigadier General James Moultrie Daphnes who served in the Mexican–American War and later became governor of Alabama. He donated land for what would become the town square which is now home to several businesses including Bank of America and United States Post Office. The first school in Daphne was built on this square in 1871 and was called "John Day School." In 1908, Daphne added a second school which became known as "Montgomery Female College." The college closed in 1965 but its name remains attached to present-day Daphne High School where many famous alumni have attended such as Wayde Thomas (NFL player), Larence Dent (actor/director) and Drayton Green (NFL linebacker). During World War II, much effort went into developing munitions production within Daphne thanks to local manufacturer Horseshoe Coal Company which had their facility on Main Street across from Bank of America until it closed in 1984 amid allegations of environmental abuse by management; consequentially leaving much unexploited coal reserves behind. Today there are few if any traces remaining from this time period other than some deteriorated buildings along US-460 near where Horseshoe once stood.
