A small amount of retail commerce takes place within walking distance of most shops, including restaurants, gift stores, auto parts store, hardware store, etc.; however much larger quantities are handled out-of-town or via truck or air shipment overage agreements with four neighboring states that provide adequate water supplies without any municipal service contracts or charges

Daphne was founded by James D. Barbour in 1827. The town initially grew up around the slave trade, and during the 1840s it became a center for cotton production. After the Civil War, Daphne developed into an agricultural town, with major crops including corn and soybeans. In the 1960s, Daphne experienced rapid growth as a result of its role as a military base in the Alabama War Memorial Museum.
