Cullman, Alabama has a rich history of optics and telescope ownership. Cullman's first telescopes were built in 1868 by Dr. J.M. Hill and Mr. T.H. White, two of Cullman's leading merchants and citizens. In 1915, the city donated a three-meter telescope to the University of Alabama in order to help support research into celestial objects by UA scientists and students. The telescope was used until it was destroyed in a fire in 1969; however, the observatory itself still stands today as a part of UA's Astronomy Dept.. In 1924, Cullman businessman Wernher von Braun donated an 8-inch refractor telescope to the University of Alabama for use by astronomers working on space exploration projects such as Project Mercury and Apollo 11; this telescope is now known as von Braun Hall at UA! In 1962, Cullman Mayor James Hargrave donated an 8-inch reflecting telescope to the University of Alabama for use by astronomical researchers conducting studies along the Mobile Bayous; this observatory is now known as Hargrave Observatory! In 1970, Cullman businessmen John Meeks and Don Welch donated an 18-inch reflector Telescope to the University ofAlabama for use on professional astronomy observations including surveys of our Solar System; this observatory is now known as Welch Observatory! The next year saw another donation when Cullman businessmen Glynnis Hughes (a native Alabaman) and her husband Clyde Akins contributed a 20-inch Schmidtian Reflector Telescope to UNUSFAM - now better know as Auburn University’s Hale Observatory! This new addition helped UWU astronomers conduct surveys that validated theories about dark matter & dark energy which are fundamental aspects of modern astrophysics! Finally in 1975, Cullmen businessmen Vernon McGeehan and his wife Betty gave back their 16-inch Dobsonian reflector Telescope to USFAM - later renamed Hale Observatory after Betty’s husband Clyde Akins - which helps USFAM astronomers make high quality astrometric measurements using ground equipment located all around Mobile Bayou!
