Cullman is a small town in Alabama, nestled in the rolling hills ofpson County. Cullman has been inhabited by humans since the beginning of time, and its history dates back to at least 1821 when Lieutenant Colonel James S. Brown of the United States Cavalry arrived in search of Indian resistance forces during the Mexican-American War. The first white person to live in Cullman was William Post, who bought land around present-day Cullman from a group of Seminole Indians in 1836. In 1840, Judge John Tipton moved his family from Mobile to Cullman after purchasing land here from the Choctaw Indians. By 1861, Cullman had an population of eighty residents and was mentioned as one of three towns in southwestern Alabama that were retaining their Indian inhabitants despite secession from the Confederate States of America. It remained a Union stronghold until 1868 when Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all Unionists within two miles of Birmingham to leave or be loyalist killed. This ordered led to open warfare between Union and Rebel troops across much of south Alabama with many civilian casualties on both sides. With most men either fighting or running away, few women and children were able to escape war-tornAlabama during this time period.. In 1865, following Appomattox Court House where Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered his own army to General Ulysses S Grant, many people living near Birmingham decided it would be best for them not to stay behind after the end of the Civil War. Many families left for Chattanooga before winter set in and those that stayed faced harsh conditions; little food was available outsideof cities due to blockade by Confederate forces and poor soil for farming.. In 1923, Cullman's first post office opened with mail sent from Montgomery and other nearby communities through horseback ridersmounted on pickups carrying mules which transported mailbags upcountry along winding roadways known as "the Pony Express". This service ended after only six months due largelyto high postage rates charged by Southern postal authorities..

In the late 19th century, Cullman became an important cotton center in Alabama. The town continued to grow during the 20th century, and in the 1940s it reached its peak with a population of around 10,000 people.
