Cullman is a town in Alabama, United States. The population was 10,534 at the 2010 census. Cullman is located on the western edge of Montgomery County and is part of the Huntsville metropolitan area. It is bordered by Marshall to the south and east, Tuscaloosa to the north, and Mobile to the west. The land that would become Cullman was first settled in 1821 by Andrew Cullman and his family after they migrated from Georgia. Andrew's father, Fayette Cullman had emigrated with General Sam Houston's army during the Mexican–American War. In 1825, Andrew and his brother James built a log cabin on what would become known as "Old Mill Road". The family later moved to a more permanent home near present-day Walmart on Mountain View Drive in 1827. Andrew Cullmann served as justice of the peace for much of his life including serving from 1831 until he died in 1850. He also donated land to be developed into what would become downtown Cullman. His grandson David Cullmann served as mayor of Cullman from 1984-1991 before becoming state auditor for Alabama in 1999-2001. One important event related to early Cullen residents was their participation in the first county election held under state government when it was created in 1832. They voted 2-1 against joining Montgomery County due to concerns about its size and potential impact on their own community development opportunities (though they eventually did join). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era policies were put into place which resulted in discrimination against African Americans such as many jobs being closed down or given lower pay while white men enjoyed greater benefits such as education and voting rights were restricted or abolished altogether throughout most southern states following this period of social upheaval known as "the Great South".
