In 1861, when Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston's army invaded Alabama, he ordered his forces to cross the Colbert River and march through Enterprise to take Mobile. The town quickly became an important cotton center due to its excellent soil and location upstream from nearby Mobile Bay; it also had access to riverboats which transported goods downstream to Mobile and points south. In 1871, after combined efforts of several local businesses and individuals, Cullman was founded as a city with its own government and identity. The name "Cullman" came from John Cullum (1792-1858), one of the early settlers in this area who donated land for the city limits; he also helped finance construction of many aspects of the original town including its first courthouse and jail. During World War II, Cullman played an important role as a military airfield serving both England and America; it hosted more than 50% of all American combat aircraft flown during that conflict. Afterward, much discussion took place about how best to use this valuable airfield which now lies mostly unused; however, it has been recently announced that plans are under way for restoration/use as an arts center/community campus; so while little can be said about what future plans may include for this once significant airport facility – it remains one of history’s most notable examples of post-war development in rural Alabama!
