In 1872, after Alabama's admission into United States during the Mexican American War, "Cullman" became home to both Confederate General Robert Ewell Lee's headquarters during his ill-fated raid on Birmingham on December 15th 1865 and Union General Benjamin Butler's command post when he attacked Selma on April 9th 1865. After Reconstruction ended in about 1870s blacks started moving into rural areas outside ofMobile towards large cities such as Atlanta andBirmingham because they were unable to get jobs or housing in those larger metropolitan areas due to segregation laws enacted during Reconstruction era. This migration increased friction between black residents living outside these newer urban centers and native-born whites who continued to control many aspects of life in these rural areas including land ownership, education levels for either race/ethnicity groups ( primarily African Americans ), economic opportunities ( typically poor ), political representation ( predominantly Democratic ), etc.. As more blacks migrated into rural areas throughout northeast Alabama they also brought with them their traditional livestock raising practices which interacted with existing white farming communities negatively affecting access to open range land necessary for agriculture while concurrently increasing competition among farmers for limited resources resulting in increased prices available for agricultural goods; this also led to increased transportation costs needed to move goods across these major commuting corridor

The town has since grown to encompass over 12 square miles with a population of about 36,000 residents today. In 1863, Cullman became one of the first towns in Alabama to begomeryized when it became part of the federal government's new county system. It remained Montgomery until 2002 when it reverted back to its original name and status as an independent city.
