In 1951, Joseph Capps was indicted for Murder with Intent to Kill after shooting and killing two people at a gas station. Capps later pleaded guilty to manslaughter instead of murder and received a fourteen year sentence behind bars before being released on parole in 1957. In 1967, Curtis Wayne Bowers was charged with Murder after shooting and wounding three people inside an apartment complex in Cullman. Bowers later plead guilty to second degree murder rather thanmurder and received a life sentence without possibility of parole which he served until 1999 when he died from natural causes at the age of 78 years old.

Cullman is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover metropolitan area. Cullman is named for General James Cullman, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. Cullman was annexed by Birmingham in 1881. The first settler in what would become Cullman was John Pritchard, who arrived on horseback from Georgia on March 7, 1819. He built a cabin and started farming around 1840. A post office called "Pritchard's Ferry" was established at Cullman on December 1, 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 14, 1850. In November 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg made an appearance at nearby Mount Pleasant during his campaign against Ulysses S Grant. After taking breakfast with local citizens at Pritchard's Ferry House, he rode north to Battle Mountain where he gave orders for Confederate forces to march southward along Interstate 95 towards Mobile Bay under cover of darkness. First Lieutenant John Hargrave organized and led a detachment of Alabama cavalry charged up Mount Pleasant Road after hearing reports that Bragg's force had withdrawn back down I-95; however they were quickly repulsed by Union cavalry under Major General George Hooker near milepost 9 on July 4th 1865 – one of three times that day Union troopers met Confederate riders head-on while riding along US Routes 31/Alabama Highway 98 (now US Route 280). A schoolhouse erected near present day town square was dedicated on December 2nd 1868 by Revs Fenton Morton and James Henson as The Baptist Missionary Society Schoolroom #1 (later known as Mrs Garnett Yester Elementary School). The original building stood until 1938 when it burned down within minutes of being dedicated following an open fire caused by children using an open flame to clean up theiractory next door. In 1932 developers acquired the property adjacent to Mrs Garnett Yester Elementary School which they turned into what became known as "Cullman Mall". At its peak it contained over 100 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Montgomery Ward & Co., AJM Chevrolet dealership and more than 20 schools including Mrs Garnett Yester Elementary School which closed its doors in 1978 due to budget cuts affecting public education across America although some students still attend her old building today as Old Academy Middle School located behind Home Depot) In 2006 demolition began of all but two buildings from mall complex making way for One Galleria shopping center that opened adjacent store fronts pedestrians only access via elevated walkways or skyway leading directly above restaurant lobbies providing beautiful panoramic views of downtown Birmingham

In 1911, Cullman became one of twenty townships within Marshall County that were established as part of a federal program to relocate Appalachians east of the Appalachian Mountains. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,812 people residing in the town proper and 565 residents living outside of it within its borders: 553 citizens from Marshall County and 26 residents from other counties in Alabama (including Montgomery). Cullman was founded in 1819 by John Cullman and his wife Susannah. The first post office at Cullman was established in 1824. The town was named for Cullman, Alabama, a county on the Tennessee River. In 1827, Cullman became the seat of government for Butler County. In 1865, the Union army destroyed most of Butler County during the American Civil War and Cullman remained unoccupied until Reconstruction began in earnest in 1867. After Reconstruction, cotton production declined and Cullman's population decreased to about 1,000 by 1920. It has since regained some of its former population size with over 6,000 residents as of 2010.
