Cullman is home to the Cullman Academy, a public school that serves grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. There are also six private schools in Cullman. In addition to its public school system, Cullman offers a variety of opportunities for children to learn such as: AISD's Head Start program; classes for students with special needs; after-school programs; and summer camps. The city was founded by white settlers in 1818 and became known as "the Athens of the South". The name came from John Caulfield who donated land for the town. In 1828, Cullmann Baptist Church was built which remains one of the most iconic buildings in town today. There have been many notable people associated with Cullman throughout its history including: Drayton Sessions (a doctor who helped found Birmingham) - he served as mayor from 1901-1904; Judge Roy Moore (a former Chief Justice of United States Supreme Court) - he was elected to represent Alabama's 13th district in the United States Congress from 2003-2007; entrepreneur Donny Hathaway - he started his own beverage company called Donny Hathaway's All American Barbecue & Brewery and now operates over 50 restaurants across 10 states urd Poultry Inc.-he opened up his first poultry restaurant in CullMANnville back in 1978 urd Golden Corral Buffet & Casino-he opened up his first casino here back in 2002 urd Jaxx Theatre-he owns and operates this theater which seats 2,500 people urd Missy Elliott - she released her latest album "Missy Elliott ft Pusha T" here at Burnett Coliseum on October 5th 2015

Cullman is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,708 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. Cullman is located on U.S. Route 59 and Alabama State Route 231. The first permanent settler in Cullman was James Henson in 1819. A post office called Cullman was established in 1826, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1837, John Nolen erected the first store in what is now Cullman. The town's name comes from a man named Cullman who ranched there until his death in 1850; his land passed to his son John Denton Cullen as part of his estate. In 1854, the state legislature passed an act creating Marshall County and providing for its organization; Cullman became a part of that county on February 14, 1855. A courthouse was built soon thereafter and served as the seat of justice for the county until 1861 when a new courthouse was built south of town on US 59 near present dayUS 31st Street SW In 1865, cotton ginning began to be done within town limits by Jeptha Wills and others which led to increased demand for water so that mills could operate more efficiently; this caused flooding which destroyed many homes and businesses along with much physical damage during 1865–1866 floods known as "the great flood". After Reconstruction ended following America's Civil War, white farmers moved into what had once been black African slave district developed around present day downtown Cullman (then called "Gulf" because Mobile Bay lay to one side). Many blacks were brought here as slaves or workers during Reconstruction due to lack of alternative housing options outside then-apocalyptic Mobile County – equivalent today to modern-dayBirmingham – so they were unable or unwilling to leave after their owners lost their jobs or were turned over To Confederate forces allied with President Abraham Lincoln’s Union forces following the American Civil War’s end 10 months later on April 9th 1865 under terms set out by General Robert E Lee Moved again by whites looking for cheap labor during Reconstruction era “carpetbagging” (i.e., trapping freedmen among whites) moonshine production boomed throughout all of Southeast Alabama because nullification laws prevented state officials from arresting sheriffs who confiscated illicit liquor traffic whether born free or user free men such as Richard Hunt & George Washington Carver effective December 6th 1870 resulting most violence erupted between newly arrived carpetbaggers & freedmen resultant 100”+ arrests annually prior confiscating over $100M worth illicit alcohol statewide large majority being used against Negroes since these men constituted 80% of all black males age 15 years or older arrested cocaine use skyrocketed from 2% Prior Prohibition Era up 95% after Repeal
