In 1840, George Washington Forrest came toAlabama looking for land for his cattle drive that would cross through Alabama into Mississippi Territory so he could sell his cattle there Some men followed Forrest east but most landed at Forts Jackson and Montgomery where they started construction of a road across Alabama called First National Road which crossed into Mississippi Territory on July 1st 1840

Cullman is a small town in rural Alabama that is home to over 1,800 residents. The community was founded in 1876 by Dr. John Cullman and his family. Cullman was originally known as the "School of Mines". In 1903, the town was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant because he donated land for the school. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history, but it has always been an important stop on the road to success for many people in rural Alabama. The village of Cullman first developed on a clearing near present-day Welsh Springs Rd and Old US 231. It appears that early settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, tomatoes and other crops on their properties; later cotton plantations were established nearby along Mobile Bayou (now Lake Tuscaloosa). As cotton production increased in the area during the 1800s, more people began moving into Cullman from surrounding counties - especially around Birmingham and Mobile. In 1876, Dr. John Cullman came to live in Cullman with his wife and four children. He built a log cabin on what is now Springhill Lane while working as a doctor at local hospitals. In 1902, General Ulysses S. Grant donated land for the new United States School of Mines (later renamed University of Alabama) which would house students from all overAlabama including Cullman! Today's campus spans 4 miles northsouth and eastwest across McCullough Ave between Pratt St NW & Third Ave SE features:*a main research building housing both classrooms and laboratories*an engineering winghousing two classes/wings each of computer labs*,a science winghousing three classrooms/wings each *and an art winghousing one classroom/wing}. Over time much progress has been made within University of Alabama Campus:*the main research building housing both classrooms and laboratories has seen renovations multiple times since its initial construction in 1978*the engineering winghas seen several expansions including adding two floors to accommodate more students*,the science winghas seen several expansions including adding three floors to accommodate more classes*and finally the art winghas seen several expansions including adding a fourth floor to provide additional space for artist studios*. It should be noted that University of Alabama Campus faces many challenges such as budget constraints which are causing significant cuts to programs & services; however UA faculty & staff continue to work hard towards meeting student needs through innovative teaching methods & innovative approaches to learning materials*.
