Cullman is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,581 at the 2010 census. Cullman is home to the Cullman R-II School District and the Cullman Regional Airport. The city also contains several small businesses and industry including a plastics plant and an aluminum smelter. The first settlement in what is now Cullman was made by James Hargrave on April 24, 1827, when he and his family traveled from Mobile to find land for themselves. By 1829, there were 10 residents of what is now Cullman. On January 1, 1830, the town was platted with a total of 36 blocks square and had a population of 507 people. In 1837, Harry Hargrave founded Hargrave & Co., which became one of the leading cotton merchants in Alabama. In 1840–41 he invested $1 million in stocks that yielded $27 million over 20 years. In 1865–66 he sold his interest in Hargrave & Co., which became part of First National Bank of Mobile Bayou City (now First American Banks), and retired from business life at age 80 years old. He died two years later on November 9th at Fort Worth General Hospital after many years ill health because of complications from rheumatic fever contracted while serving as captain in Company A detachment under General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War
