Center Point, Alabama is known as the "The Glass City." The city was founded in 1879 by J.B. Wilcox and named for him, Center Point (Cottonwood). The first glass factory in Alabama was built here in 1907. In 1925, a new hotel was built on the site of the old Chamberlin Hotel and became known as the Star Inn. In 1959, Center Point Development Company merged with Birmingham-based Gulf Coast Development Corporation to create One Industrial Place Incorporated (OIPI). In 1924, Coca-Cola moved its bottling plant from Chattanooga to Centre Point after purchasing a five-acre lot for $2 million from A&P grocery store founder Sam Rayburn. In 1957, Coca-Cola relocated its corporate headquarters from Atlanta to Centre Point following its purchase of One Industrial Place Incorporated from Gulf Coast Development Corporation. The town experienced major financial reverses during the late nineteenth century due to various factors such as over-population and reduced trade opportunities along with natural disasters like floods that struck several times in that decade. However, Centerpoint eventually regained some stabilityand began to experience significant development throughout the twentieth century culminating in its incorporation into Mobile County during 1931. Today, CenterPoint remains an important cultural & economic hub within Mobile County - home to numerous popular tourist attractions such as CentrePoint Park which features a variety of activities for all ages including swimming & fishing (seasonal), weightlifting & basketball (year-round), concerts & family events (summertime only), as well as local shops & restaurants providing services year-round including general store operations during our wintertime).
