The town was founded by slaves who escaped to freedom in 1851 and was known as "The Fayetteville of the South." The town's population grew rapidly after Reconstruction began in 1865 and many African Americans moved to Center Point from other parts of the state. The town remained an important stop for fugitive slaves until their abolition in 1883. Center Point is located at 36°30'24" North, 82°14'38" West (36.960968, -82.278629). It has a total area of , making it one of the most populous towns in north Alabama. As of the census of 2010, there were 23 people living in Center Point with 15% being black or African American residents and 75% white residents. In 1861, Union General Robert Ewell decided to attack Centrepoint during Confederate General Jubal Early's raid into central Alabama. Ewell ordered his men not to fire on civilians if they could avoid it, but instead aimed their cannons at buildings near Centrepoint to distract Early from taking moreemen prisoners or destroying goods inside. Unknown to Ewell, many people had fled into CenterPoint since he had not authorized its destruction and some managed to escape capture before Ewell could arrive at least 5 miles away from where he thought he would find them . As a result of this event, many African Americans living within Union lines were able to flee southward and eventually reach freedom while others were captured or killed outright by Union forces occupying their homes .
