Center Point is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Center Point were white men who migrated from Georgia in 1814. They named their community after the point on the Mobile River where they first landed. They built a log cabin and began trading with Indians and other travelers passing through on their way to Cahokia (present-day Illinois). The early settlers were Methodists, but by 1825 they had switched to Baptism which helped increase trade with nearby Indian villages and make Center Point one of the most important cotton towns in Alabama during the antebellum period. In 1827, John Witherspoon became pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Centrepoint and soon decided that religious education should be given to all children living in his congregation—a policy later known as "Witherspoon's Law". This decision produced much controversy among some members of his church because it limited access to education for many poor people who could not afford it or did not want it. In 1830, King George III visited Centrepoint and pronounced it a "splendid little town" due to its new brick building erected by James Ritchie; this building still stands today as part of Main Street downtown Centrepoint. During this time also, many mills were built along Centerpoint’s main street including those operated by Pemberton & Greenough and Juglar & Sons Paper Company; these mills are now gone but their memory lives on through local businesses such as Beecher’s Furniture Store and Hartsfield-Jackson Airport souvenir shop.) Center Point is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,887 at the 2010 census. Center Point was founded in 1848 as a post office by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men during the Mexican–American War. It became a town in 1873. The first settlers were Methodist Episcopalians from Tennessee who named their community "Northpoint." In 1848, General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men established Camp Forrest on the Lower Mobile River near present-day Centre Point to help them resist Spanish forces marching southward across Mexico to attack Pensacola. The camp was later renamed Center Point after Forrest's headquarters at Fort Payne (now Decatur). In 1863, Confederate general Robert Ewell established Camp Pickett east of Centre Point along the Chattahoochee River for operations against Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. After Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Union troops burned down many of the homes in Centre Point and other parts of Bibb County due to lack of food or water supplies. The Confederates moved their camp several miles east of CentrePoint to make way for new fields that would be developed elsewhere in Bibb County. CentrePoint prospered through the 1920s as an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for most of its economic growth until World War II when defense industry took over much of what had been done before with cotton land being used more intensively for corn and soybeans production which supported aluminum smelters and other heavy industrial plants throughout Southeast Asia during that time period also
The town of Center Point, Alabama was founded by the brothers Ebenezer and Elias White in 1819. The town was named after a point on the Chattahoochee River where they first landed. The White brothers were pioneers in the area, building their first cabin in 1825. In 1830, they purchased a tract of land along the river and began to grow crops. They also built a sawmill and started to construct homes. In 1835, Ebenezer White died and his brother Elias took over the business. The Whites remained active in their community until their deaths in 1852 and 1865 respectively.
