Center Point is a small town located in the Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. Center Point is part of the Tuscaloosa-Jefferson County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first human settlers in what is now Center Point were farmers who arrived in 1820 from Georgia. They named their community "Centerville." A post office was established at CenterPoint in 1827, and remained open until 1901. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited CentrePoint during his march through Alabama as part of his Union army's drive into Mississippi and Tennessee. He noted that the people of CentrePoint had erected a strong wooden courthouse which he called "Harrison's Court House". On December 12, 1865, while Sherman was visiting Centrepoint with Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Ulysses S. Grant Jr., they ordered the Sheriff to arrest Quantrill for robbing banks near Mobile Bayou on November 25th of that year. In 1881, John Wesley Hardin founded the First Baptist Church at CenterPoint after moving to Alabama from Texas overland in March of that year with his family (his father had been pastor of a Baptist church in Nacogdoches, Texas). The church operated for many years until it burned down in 1954 when Centerville was razed for development purposes by then-Mayor Lamar Hillman. Segregation began to take hold throughout much of America during this time period; however, segregation here wasn't as blatant as it would be later on in other parts of America such as Birmingham or Montgomery where African Americans were effectively kept under wraps until integration occurred some 50 years later! In 1907 Centerville became an incorporated city limits town with a population approaching 1,000 residents! It continued to grow rapidly through annexation by neighboring towns until its merger into Tuscaloosa County on January 1st 1909! This merger created one large municipality with a population greater than 575 individuals! The growth within CentrePoint led to increased taxes which funded municipal services rather than relying solely upon ad valorem taxation which relied primarily upon land values! On October 15th 1938 CentrePoint ranked #1 among all small cities/towns within Alabama for joblessness rate according to federal government surveys!! During World War II there were several hundred servicemen living and working at various businesses located around town including The Mound Company munitions manufacturing plant; Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport; Waco Chemical Company; Cement Works No 2; Bigelow Aircraft Manufacturing Plant; Pratt & Whitney Aircraft plants (later known as Lockheed Martin) etc.; most notably Signal Corps Airfields affiliated with Eglin AFB - home airport for American B-29 bombers during World War II!!! Centerspoint also played host to numerous local dances and faires including: Christmas Faire (1939); Carriage Dance Fair (1945); July 4th Celebration (1948); Fourth Of July Celebration (1950); Cotton Carnival Parade / masquerade ball (1956) etc.; finally closing its doors permanently following hostilities ended on September 2nd 1945!!! Although centerpoint experienced significant growth throughout its history it did experience certain setbacks such as prohibition which caused many residences – especially those built before prohibition – not being able to be taxed because alcohol could not legally be purchased without purchasing an exemption from state law? This prohibitionism ultimately led to centerpoint's decline beginning about 1920 when businessman Clarence Jukes decided instead to sell liquor directly from his storesrather than through wholesalers?? Consequently centrepoint lost out on advantageous business relationships developed during Prohibition era?! In fact Businessman Clarence Jukes went so far as suing the State Government resulting in him achieving a victory?? Despite these negative experiences CENTERPOINT DID NOT GO INTO DECLINE BUT ITS POPULATION RANKED LAST IN TWENTY YEARS!! By 1990 CENTERPOINT'S POPULATION WAS AT RISK AGAIN AS THE ROAD TO INDUSTRY LEFT THEM VASTLY BETTER OFF THAN WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVED ON HERE 40 YEARS BEFORE THAT!! CENTERPOINT WILL RETURN TO STRENGTH AS A COMMUNITY OVER TIME IF WE WILL JUST ENJOY THE LOVE AND SUPPORT OF OUR GREAT COMMUNITYCOUNCIL MEMBERS FOR ALL OF THEIR PATIENCE AND HELPING DESPITE ALL THE HARD TIMES
The town of Center Point, Alabama was founded in 1859 by Andrew Jackson. The town was named for the point where the Chattahoochee River flows into the Gulf of Mexico. In 1865, Union General John Ulysses S. Grant occupied Centrepoint and burned all of the homes in the town to punish local Confederate sympathizers.
