The community was founded in 1881 by white settlers and named for Calera, Italy. The first permanent settler in Calera was William Boudreaux, who arrived in 1881. He platted the town on a tract of land that he had acquired from the Cherokee Nation. The name "Calera" means "citadel." In 1903, Boudreaux donated land to the town to create a public square and schoolhouse. A post office called Calera was established in 1903, and remained open until it closed in 1951. In 1911, John Fenton purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of east-west road from Will Rogers for $5 per acre (0·86 hectares). Fenton built a cotton gin and other ranching operations near his new settlement. By 1920, Fenton's holdings included some 8 miles (12 km) of main street and about 20 buildings including two hotels and six stores. Fenton died in 1925; his widow continued to operate the business until her death in 1961. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese Americans were relocated to America including many families with children who were taken into custody during the occupation period known as internment camps like Topaz Lake camp near Fairhope, Alabama which operated from 1942-1945
