Calera is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Calera was Capt. James Cook in 1795 while on his final voyage around the world. Cook named it "Cerrah" after one of his two native landfalls in India- Cerrah and Koodah. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson passed through Marshall County on his way to the Battle of Mobile Bay which led to his election as president that year. On July 4th of that year (1801), Jackson ordered all military forces in Marshall County to disband except for a detachment under General John C Thomas who were ordered to garrison Fort Pickens on Choctawhatchee River near modern day Auburn, Alabama In 1802, Calera's postmaster general Isaac Norris wrote: "It will be proper for us hereto give notice that from this time forward our mail will only be sent out by packet boat from Huntsville." This made it possible for citizens of other nearby towns such as Cullman and Decatur to have their own mail services without having to rely on Huntsville for deliveries. The first steamboat reached Calera in 1829 when the "Alabama" went downriver from Montgomery with a load of goods brought overland by wagon train

Calera is a small town in Union County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Montgomery metropolitan area. The first settler in present-day Calera was James Cook who arrived in 1827. Cook's family moved to what is now known as Crane Township in 1830 and they were followed by others over the next few years. In 1835, General John Custer fought with his Indian allies at the Battle of Little Big Horn and many of these pioneer settlers came west with him to take up land grants that had been given to them. The first post office was established in Calera on July 1, 1840. An early school was built on private property nearpresent-day Crane Township in 1848-49 by Mrs. Jonell Hoggs and teacher Drury Ladds brother-in-law Amos Coffin from Mobile County, Alabama; both men were natives of Georgia and worked for Mrs. Hoggs for several years before she died suddenly in 1850. By 1865 there were only a handful of residents left living within what are today the limits of Crane Township and east side of present day Greenville Cemetery; most adult males had either migrated or died off during the Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865 local citizen Hiram Beard started an agricultural society which grew into one of the most successful organizations ever formed outside agriculture circles in America; it has continued operation to this day (2007) as The Hiram Beard Agricultural Society Incorporated #92039
In 1763, a group of Cherokee Indians led by Chief Musa set out from Alabama to found the town of Calera on the Tombigbee River. The Creeks who had been living near the town were forced to leave and some were killed in the process. The new settlers built their homes around a small stockade which they called "The Fort." They began trading with other tribes and developing relationships with them. In 1801, the Creek Nation was ceded to United States by Great Britain as part of Treaty of Gadsden. The area that now includes Alabama was part of Georgia until 1819 when it was admitted into the Union as a state.
