Calera is a town in Alabama, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Calera were French traders in 1698. The town site was probably chosen because it was close to the Mobile River and had several good sites for trading water rights with other Indian nations. A post office opened in 1824, and a store and cotton gin were built in 1830. By 1835, there were 8 houses and 160 people living on the east side of the Mobile River. The west side of the river became a farming community with churches being built there in 1839 and 1840. In 1861, Captain John Moulton established Fort Moultrie at present day Calera after his victory over General Andrew Jackson's army at New Orleans during the American Civil War. Moulton's fort served as an advance base for Confederate forces during the war until it fell to Union troops December 12, 1865. Aftermath of Reconstruction led to increased competition between white farmers and black farmers in what is now Calera area; this caused some tension which ended with passage of the National Agricultural Fair Act in 1933 which prohibited discrimination against agricultural products by landlords or others who held land title within any given radius defined by law enforcement officials
In 1821, Calera was one of the first townships in the newly organized Alabama Territory. The area at present-day Calera was part of Mobile County until 1798, when it and all of Mobile were combined into Jackson County. In 1837, Calera became a part of what is now Alabama's Capital District.
