Calera is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Mobile–Tensaw–Ft. Worth Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located in the Huntsville metropolitan area, which had a population of 2,653 as of 2016. The first settlers in Calera were black men who founded the community in 1881 as a stop on their journey to find new land. The name "Calera" means "place where there are cottonwoods." In 1911, George Prentice donated land for a high school and cultural center which became known as Prentice-O'Keefe High School today. In 1961, Calera residents voted to become an independent municipality with its own government and police force. That year, they also held their first election for mayor and council members. It has since held more elections than any other municipality in Mobile County - including six times as mayor and nine times as councilmember combined!

Calera is a small town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that became Calera was first settled by white people in 1802. In 1828, two families from Mobile moved to what is now Calera and started a gristmill. By 1830, there were seven families living in Calera and nine businesses were active. In 1840, a post office was established at Calera and the first settler to receive mail there was Isaac Willis. The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1865 due to competition from more efficient mills in the area. In 1868, three African American men - John Bogan (borncirca 1795), James Dixon (1801-1892) and Solomon Dixon (1810-1864) - were tried for conspiracy to commit robbery inside an oil refinery on Interstate 15 near Prattville during Reconstruction Era America's time of racial change after being released on bail prior to trial because they could not afford lawyer fees. They had been arrested while working as black workers at the refinery and their case attracted national attention because it showed that blacks could be held accountable for crimes committed by white people during Reconstruction era America's time of racial change. In 1870s one bedroom homes began being erected outside of town limits along with stores and churches catering to residents of neighboring towns such as Decatur or Athens which increased trade between those towns and Calera as well as investments done by local businessmen into new industries such as textiles or agriculture which boosted the economy of both communities over time. However by 1920s most residents had migrated away from rural Sumter County preferring opportunities available nearer major cities like Birmingham or Huntsville where jobs were plentiful but also affordable given advances in technology; however some residents have returned over time mostly through family ties connected to those who once lived hereabouts including relative newcomers like my grandfather’s father who grew up hereabouts when his parents immigrated from Russia before World War II; my grandmother’s brother who later served as mayor of Decatur; her husband’s uncle – alsograveside – who also grew up hereabouts when he married my grandmother’s aunt back when she still lived within easy driving distance hereabouts; our grandson whose wife moved him hereabouts years ago now enjoying all aspects included herein: culture/history/lifestyle etc., producing roots going back centuries even further than many realize!
