Calera is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. The name "Calera" is from the Creek language and means "place of plenty." The first settler in the area was Wm. Hargrave, who came to what is now Calera in 1819. He built a cabin on Caney Fork of the Etowah River. A post office was established in 1824 and named for Hargrave, which continued to be used until 1881. In 1850, John Pritchard bought land east of present-day Calera and built a cotton gin there. In 1851, he organized the First Presbyterian Church in Alabama. It has been reported that Pritchard's idea for naming his new town after himself originated with this business venture. In 1886, Burkhardt Ladd founded a mill here on Little Etowah River and began crushing limestone into building blocks for use as lime mortar in southern factories. By 1888, Ladd had erected two mills (the old one still stands) and employed about 100 people; by 1900 his mills had produced over 11 million bricks per year for local homes and businesses alone! By 1915 Ladd's company employed 375 people; by 1920 it boasted production totaling more than 60 million bricks per year! During World War II almost all of Calera's brickmaking capability went into production to support military buildups throughout Southeast America; however much brick remained unsold because many residents chose not to move away during wartime rationing restrictions. After the war ended, most of these plants were closed down but some reopened as artisans' studios or small businesses; however overall brickmaking reverted back to its pre-war levels with only a few notable exceptions between 1945 and 1960!

Calera, Alabama is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 979 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville/Decatur/Athens metropolitan area. The name "Calera" is from the Choctaw word "kalara," meaning "place of refuge." The first settlers in what is now Calera were pioneers who arrived in 1821 when Andrew Jackson was president and General James K. Polk was secretary of state. They were attracted to the fertile land and good company that awaited them there. In 1830, Jacob Bell founded a gristmill on White Oak Creek which soon became one of the most important mills in Marshall County. He also built a cotton gin and sawmill on his property which still stand today. In 1831, John Crouch settled in what is now Calera and started a school that would later become known as Crouch High School. In 1836, Isaac Beavers moved to Calera from Mobile where he had been working for Governor Thomas Bogan as a justice of the peace. He began to build homes here and soon enough, he had several buildings erected including a log cabin called the "Beaver House." He also started up a flour mill on White Oak Creek which still stands today. In 1840, pioneer Ebenezer Cobb bought some land northwest of present-day Calera from Daniel Boone for $100 dollars cash only! This made Cobb one of the wealthiest men in Marshall County at that time! As time passed and more people moved into this area, so too did their lifestyles change - gradually but surely becoming more commercialized with less focus on agriculture or nature!. As late as 1865 ( during Reconstruction), an old man named George Wirtz lived near modern day Calera until his death at age 104 years old! Today marks Wirtz' 123rd birthday!
