However, becausephenix city was much smaller than Calera (it had only around thirty-five people), it did not experience as much growth or development as the other municipalities within Birminghamshire%. On April 14th,1845, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson on Lake Pontchartrain, many citizens joined forces with General Robert Ewell in fighting against Union troops led by Ulysses S. Grant. Afterward, most residents abandoned their support for secession and chose instead to stay within the Confederacy. In 1865, after Confederate troops surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, most residents leftAlabama for northern states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin.) However, some residents decided to stay behind because they believed that Reconstruction should continue until all slaves were free in America – an idea that was not accepted by many white supremacists within the Confederacy.).
