In 1802, the first permanent settler in what is now Calera was James H. Richardson. He built a cabin on the original Horseshoe Bend of the Alabama River. In 1818, he and his family moved to what is now Addison County and started a sawmill there. The Richardsons were among the first white people to live in what is now Decatur County. In 1830, they bought land east ofDecatur from John Allen and began to build a dam across the Alabama River to power their mill. In 1837, they sold their holdings in Decatur County to William Peevey. From 1840 until his death in 1860, Peevey was one of the most important citizens of Calera. He was also its mayor from 1849 until 1850 and from 1861 until 1865
