Gun targets have been around in Calera since the 1800s. The first target was a small woodcock shown at a fair in 1892. By 1907, there were three gun ranges in town and twelve shooters. Today, the town has six shooting ranges with over 150 guns available for purchase, as well as four shotgun ranges and five rifle ranges. There are also two skeet and Trap fields open to the public. In addition to its role as a center of country shooting, Calera is also home to the world’s largest powderkeg demonstration area; it features more than fifty steel targets measuring up to seventy-five feet tall and thirty-six feet wide – making it one of the most popular areas for target shooting in Alabama!

In Calera, Alabama, the history of guns and gun owners dates back to the early 1800s. Gunowners in this area were often members of local militias or rifle clubs, which functioned as a militia for the protection of their homes and families. In 1819, a group of men from nearby Mobile decided to start their own police department. This led to the first shootout between law enforcement officers in Calera. Gunfights continued to occur throughout the 1800s, but these tended to be more localized than what we see today. In 1887, a group of men from Auburn started an arms race in Calera by purchasing large amounts of firearms and building up an arsenal. The weapon they purchased was an 8-inch shotgun called the “Pistolero”. This caused some big problems for local law enforcement because it made it very easy for criminals and outlaws to purchase firearms without fear of detection. One of the most famous gunfights in Calera’s history took place on November 16th, 1920 when five gunmen entered into a house at 5:00 PM with intent on shooting everyone inside. When confronted by local authorities, they opened fire instead and resulted in three deaths (the gunman himself died after being shot) before being apprehended by police negotiators who managed to talk them outofit. That night is also recognized as World War II’s Bloodiest Day when over 75 people were killed during two hourslong gunbattle outside a grocery store
Calera is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Calera has a total area of , all land. The first permanent settler in what would become Calera was James Hance in 1821. He named his new community after himself and his family's hometown of Carthage, Tennessee. Hance had come to Alabama as an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of the First Regiment of Volunteer Infantry during the war. Afterward he became a successful lawyer and judge in Mobile before moving to Jefferson County in 1830. Here he founded what would become Calera on a tract of land that he purchased from Creek Indians near Mobile Bayou A post office called "Calera" was established in 1834, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1901. According to the U.S. Postal Service history file for Jefferson County, "the first postmaster general [was] James Auld who served from 1834-1836." In 1840, Andrew Jackson appointed George Stephenson as Postmaster General; Stephenson continued this position until his death in 1865 by order of President Abraham Lincoln; then John Dankworth took over for three years until Benjamin Fenton relieved him on November 12, 1868 In 1861 Confederate forces sacked Union barracks at Fort Pickens within sight of Calera; most notably members of Company K1 (later Confederate regiment) were killed or captured there that day including captain JF Crocker 20 years later another Confederate force burned down Union post office at Depot Landing which destroyed much property within view of town limits In 1898 local resident Ethel Mayo started an unsuccessful campaign to add black citizens to white school districts through referendum vote with support from both white and black community groups

Calera, Alabama is a town located in the southwestern corner of Atmore County, Alabama. The population was 1,787 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Area. The first settler in Calera was James Auld, who arrived in 1802 and platted what is now downtown Calera. The town was founded by Andrew Dunlap on November 10, 1861. Dunlap named it after his friend and business associate John C. Calera. In 1865, settlers from Greenville moved into what is now northeast Calera to take advantage of good soil and timber resources thereabouts. By 1869, all but one house had been built when disease struck the community and within a year most of the settlers had died from smallpox or other causes brought over with them from Greenville. In 1870-71 developer George Piggott erected a frame schoolhouse/ grocery store on what is now southeast corner Main Street and Magnolia Avenue (now known as Court Square). The store became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Mobile and at least two other nearby cities: Montgomery for cotton goods and Huntsville for barbecued pork products (the first such market in Mobile). In 1876 Piggott sold his interest in the store to Maud Corderoy Bassett who renamed it "Bassett's grocery." By 1888 local farmers were raising cattle on several thousand acres that stretched northwestward from Asbury Park to Decatur; this area would become known as Bulldog County when that county was organized in 1912. In 1886 David Bogue bought some land east of downtown Calera which he used as pastureland for his beef cows until 1895 when he developed a small townsite called Bogue's Landing near present day Old Fort Payne Boulevard and US 82/Highway 431 (now US 231) which became home to about 150 people including 30 women who raised cotton narcotics out back while menfolk worked inside the stores carrying groceries, selling flowers etc.; prostitution continued until prohibition began enforcement efforts by law enforcement authorities in 1933 made this activity illegal again! In 1906 Confederate veteran Elisha Gibbs homesteaded 350 acres north of downtownCalera along present day Hwy 71 &Alabaster Rd; this property remains today part of Tuscaloosa National Forest
