Baird as Caley Station on the Choctawhatchee River near present day Auburn Hills, Michigan. development of the town began with Mormon missionaries coming to preach in 1876 and1877 from Arkansas City, Kansas Territory to establish a mission for their church there; however no building were erected until after Mobile's incorporation as a city on December 14th, 1881 The first store in what would become Calera opened its doors on November 6th 1880 at Seventh Street and Monroe Avenue. A post office called "Caley" was established in 1881; it remained in operation until 1967. In 1903 Mayor John A. Jenkins donated land along Hospital Road east of town to form what would become Birmingham–Hoover Airport; construction began that year and the airport opened officially on February 12th, 1934. "In 1934", according to "The tidewater Times", "the new airport had one runway (later upgraded to 3/24) which handled only small planes but it soon became an important stop off therink for local passengers and cargo." Today, both runways are used by charter airlines as well as general aviation operations from various locations across Tuscaloosa County including Calera Airport . during World War II much of the production for military aircraft took place at this airport including many B-29s built by Boeing ; some 1,500 jobs were created here indirectly through subcontractors employed at other facilities around Tuscaloosa County
The first permanent settlers in Calera were three families who arrived in 1818. The land was donated by the Creek Nation, and they began to live there until 1830. In 1835, a post office was established, and by 1840, the community had a school and two stores. By 1850, the population had grown to 10 people. In 1865, a Methodist church was built, followed by a Baptist church in 1868. A cotton gin was built in 1870 and became the main industry of the town. From 1890 through 1920, Calera had a sawmill and an iron Works. The last industry closed down in 1984.
