There are three contributing buildings still standing in town: one Federal building built around 1800 by General Andrew Jackson; two brick churches completed around 1915; and a blacksmith shop/ forge dating back to 1868 built by Wm H Morgan who also operated a post office hereabouts until it was discontinued in 1966. A few other structures include a Methodist church completed circa 1907, an old schoolhouse dating back to 1867 (now used as a garage), and some homes built between 1890-1893 for farmers living along US 82 east of town.. Ixtapose these with remaining historical sites such as Fort Gaines National Monument just outside town limits which includes detailed remains including cannons used during the War Of 1812, among others; or nearby Moultonborough Military Camp which served Confederate forces during The Civil War with its large arsenal including artillery pieces stored underground until recently when most or all were destroyed during Hurricane Florence within days after landfall Today only 1% (of its original population) remain within its borders while over half its original agricultural acreage has been lost due to farming changes brought about by increased competition from neighboring rural areas."

Calera was a small settlement in Jefferson County, Alabama, that was founded by white settlers in 1836. The community was located on the Calera River and consisted of a few homes and a mill. The mill operated until 1856, when it went out of business. The town name may derive from the Welsh word "calern" which means "hilltop." In 1836, some of the first English settlers in Jefferson County arrived at Calera and began erecting houses. By 1840, there were enough residents to establish a school and post office. In 1865, the town moved to its present location on the banks of the Calera River. At that time, Calera had a population of about twenty people. The townspeople built several stores and taverns during the early 1800s before moving their operations to present-day Birmingham in 1881. During World War II, many local businesses supported the war effort by providing supplies and services such as manufacturing munitions or shipping foodstuffs across country. The town of Calera was founded in 1819 by John and Sarah Funk. The town grew quickly, and by 1826 it had a population of 150 residents. In that year, the town was incorporated as a village. The first mayor of Calera was James Prentice. The first school in the town was built in 1827. By 1830, the population of Calera had reached 350 residents. In 1832, the first courthouse was built in the town. The town continued to grow rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of 2,000 people. In 1843, the first railroad arrived in Calera, and soon the town became an important transportation center. By 1850, all of Calera had been acquired by the Southern Railroad Company.
