Calera is a town in Perry County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Perry County. The town was founded in 1875 by John Pritchett and named for Greek goddess Ceres. It was platted in 1883 and incorporated as a town in 1888. The name derived from the Spanish word "calero" meaning cauldron or potter's wheel. The first post office opened in Calera on July 26, 1889. The first settler to arrive in what is now Calera was Wm Jowers with his family on February 15, 1875. In 1885 Pritchett built a log cabin near present-day Calera Center on land he donated to the government for the purpose of erecting a courthouse and jail. The first school opened in 1895 and continued until it closed in 1922 due to financial problems brought about by World War I & II boom times. A second school building was erected after the war but it also failed to meet financial needs and closed down soon afterward too. In 1932-1933 construction started on what would become known as "the Great Lakes School", which would serve as both schools until 1955 when one consolidated into one structure which still stands today; that building houses the Calera Historical Museum today! In 1955-1956 two new high schools were constructed; one across from downtown (now called George Washington High School) and another off Old US Highway 431 just east of present day Interstate 20 (now I-20 exit 133). These buildings served primarily as middle schools until 2002 when they were replaced by Perry County Middle School located just north of downtown – making HEALTHY FAMILY THE NUMBER ONE SCHOOL IN CALERA TODAY!
