The history of firearms in Calera, Alabama goes back to the early 1800s. The area was inhabited by the Creek Indians and early settlers were armed with muskets and shotguns. In 1814, Captain David Watts founded a small town in what is now Calera. Watts named his town after General Andrew Jackson and the Creek War of 1812. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1824, Captain John Houstoun established a trading post in what is now Calera. Houstoun was known for his quality guns and he sold firearms to both Native Americans and white settlers. In 1830, Colonel Samuel Morse purchased land adjacent to Watts Settlement from Governor Claiborne Alexander for $1,000 dollars. Morse built a house on the site that served as his home until his death in 1851. By 1860,Calera had come under state control and it began to grow rapidly as an agricultural center with slave labor used for growing crops. By 1865, there were more than 200 residents living in Calera. During the Civil War, several local businesses produced munitions for the Confederate army including Jno's Rifle Works which made rifles using captured Union cannon barrels. After the war ended, most of these businesses closed down but some continued operations until around 1870 when they merged with other local businesses to form the present day city government

Calera is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 631 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tensaw-Mobile, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Calera settlers were five men who came from Illinois in 1827 and started a corn farm about two miles west of present day Calera. In 1830, they bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of the river and built their own log cabin on it. They named their settlement "Calera" after the abundance of cedar trees near their farmstead. A post office was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The first school class taught by Mrs. Sisson was held in an open field north of the current courthouse on what is now Old Highway 21st Street; this building still stands today as part of the school district's administrative headquarters building. In 1840, Larkin & Overstreet sold 724 acres (3 km²) east of present-day Calera to John Denton for $7000 cash which he used to start what would become known as Denton County.. He named his new county after himself - Larkin County being his initial donation from Illinois.. His brother James Denton also contributed money to help him fund this project.. In 1845 Jno Hargrave donated 912 acres (4 km²), east of present day Calara to form Grant County with headquarters located at what is now Hinds Community College campus across US 30 from downtown Mobile proper
