The first gunslingers in Birmingham were probably hired by Andrew Jackson during his 1828 campaign for president. Jackson was known for his strong support of firearms and campaigned on behalf of gun rights. Many of his supporters carried firearms with them on election day as a sign of their support. The popularity of gunslinging gradually began to decline after the American Civil War ended. However, it regained some popularity during Reconstruction periods beginning in 1865. This time, gunslingers served as sources of entertainment for locals and tourists alike.

The first gun sling was made in Birmingham, Alabama in 1868. It consisted of a piece of metal tubing with a loop at one end and two pieces of Wire rope around the other.
Birmingham, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Jefferson County. As of 2010, Birmingham had an estimated population of 700,000 people,[1] making it the largest city in Alabama by population and the tenth-largest city in the United States. Birmingham was founded as a trading post on May 8, 1814 by General Andrew Jackson and his forces during their march to victory over Native American warriors at Battle Horseshoe Bend. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location near rivers that served as transportation routes for workers and goods arriving from surrounding counties. By 1832, Birmingham had become one of America's leading cotton manufacturing cities with its own cotton gin and textile mills. The area now known as downtown was developed primarily as an entertainment district centered around Second National Bank and Druid Hills Park after approval by Mayor John Broyles in 1850. In 1859, Birmingham became the first city in America to be rocked by violence when white mobs burned down African American homes and businesses throughout the inner city following a successful campaign led by Samuel Whitehead against racial discrimination within white society. In 1865, Birmingham seceded from Alabama to join Confederate States of America; however, shortly afterwards Union forces occupied the city following a bloody battle between Union troops and Confederate guerrilla forces known as The Battle of Birmingham.[2] After several months of combat, which resulted in more than 100 deaths[3], Union commanders ordered all freed slaves within City limits to leave for fear they would join Confederate troops.[4][5] Over 4500 black citizens were lost during The Battle of Birmingham – about one out every five residents – making it one of history's most notorious lynchings.[6][7] In addition to the heavy losses suffered at battlefronts like Atlanta (1865) and Vicksburg (1868), many black families also lost members in skirmishes or bombings across central Alabama during this time period including those living near Black Mountain Resort located just outside present day downtown Birmingham[8]. Although race played no role in these events per se,[9], they did thrust Charleston Street into notoriety[10] and open wounds that still remain today

Birmingham is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 103,546 at the 2010 census. Birmingham is the second-largest city in Alabama and the tenth-largest city in the United States after New York City and Chicago. It is also one of the most populous cities in Alabama with over 1 million residents. The origins of Birmingham are obscure but it likely began as an area around what is now Midtown on Saturday Street, which was then part of Mobile County. In 1871, voting rights were granted to African Americans by Congresswoman Lucy Blythe McGee and Mayor John Chilton for all white municipalities within Mobile County; this included Saturday Street. On December 14th, 1876, Birmingham became its first major municipality and became a state capital under Governor Clements. In 1895, both the State Senate (then called the General Assembly) and Mayor Chilton left office to become judges on circuit court circuits; this created a power vacuum that was filled by Judge John Hance who served from 1897 until his death in 1914. He had been elected mayoralty twice before but never served due to term limits set by then-Governor George Wallace during his campaign for governor in 1964. One reason why Birmingham made such rapid growth during this time period may have been because there were no other black municipalities within Alabama until 1906 when it became part of Montgomery County after being split from Mobile County following racial discrimination lawsuits brought against both counties by whites seeking financial compensation for lost property values due to integration efforts at county level). However, even prior to 1906 many blacks lived outside of downtowns such as Ensley or Hooverville where services were available including grocery stores and transportation not easily accessible to them or their families closer to home across town on Main Street or Fourth Avenue/King Road. streetcar lines running north from downtown ran past Ensley down King Road into Hooverville which had stoplights located near today's Greenlaw Shopping Center (now known as "The Mall") back then just past today's Academy Boulevard intersection before continuing north into Northwest Mobile County via Mt Pleasant Road while today's south side of standardized housing developments along Westside Highway continue eastward into Black Belt through present day Phenix City Limits adjacent to present day Highland Park industrial development built largely between 1909-1920 using much of same land used for farmland since first settled by Creek Indians four years earlier near current location of Fort Valley Industrial Complex northeast corner of present day Dwarf Lake lot adjoining Dunnysbrook Golf Course southwest corner (right) corner (left) side lot adjoining Springdale Lakeside subdivision east side open space formerly known as "Hoover Township" - annexed by Birmingham in 1907
