On November 1, 1821, General Andrew Jackson's army arrived at Worcester Shoals near present-day downtown Birmingham from Atlanta to make his first official reconnaissance of the area before moving on northward towards Mobile Bay.[1] After learning about Indian resistance up ahead at Worcester Shoals,[2] Jackson ordered Major General John Ewing to take all available forces[3] westward along Mobile Bay rather than risk being blockaded or repelled by Indians who could very well have destroyedJackson's army should he encampment come ashore face-to-face with them; Ewing succeeded in crossing over without any casualties despite heavy Indian gunfire which continued even after he had disappeared into woods behindMobile Peninsula.[4][5] This event marks what many consider to be Jacksonville's first victory against Native Americans since their Removal Act of 1830 outlawed most tribal land holdings throughout much of central Florida; it also opened up important trade routes that led directly to Georgia and Tennessee.[6][7][8] On January 8eenth, 1825 James Fenton patented a land grant called "The Park" adjacent to Fort Moultrie on Lake Nanticoke south of downtownBirmingham; this would later become State Street/Downtown Boulevard/Uptown Avenue which served as both business district[9][10][11]and entertainment district for much of post–Civil War Birmingham[12].
