Bessemer is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Bessemer is located in the central part of Marshall County on the Cahaba River and is bordered to the east by Mobile, to the south by Decatur, and to the west by Muskegon Heights. The area that would become Bessemer was first settled in 1814 when a group of Englishmen named it "Bessemer". In 1819, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Gadsden to Bessemer after defeating George Armstrong Custer at Battle of New Market Hill. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a major transportation artery and its access to salt water supplies. By 1830, Bessemer had a population of 1,500 people and became an important center for trade with surrounding counties. In 1836, Hardin County was formed from parts of Butler and Shelby Counties and began growing rapidly due to cotton production around nearby Muscle Shoals Lake. This led to increased trade with other parts of Georgia and Tennessee as well as new industry in nearby Birmingham becoming vital for local economy. When federal troops arrived during Reconstruction in 1880 they found little evidence that white society had changed much since slavery had ended almost 150 years earlier. However, some African Americans who had workedvoriously during Reconstruction began organizing into angry mobs known as "The White Citizens' Alliance" which quickly clashed with local white supremacists known as The Klan (Klan refers both to white supremacists and black nationalists). Violence erupted throughout Alabama over control of resources such as food stamps, housing assistance, education opportunities for blacks AND white children living below poverty levels; schools were burned down or looted; arrests were made without warrants; thousands died while under arrest or detention; plantations were forced off-limits to whites while their slaves continued working outdoors without pay or benefits; land titles were taken away from many African Americans who could not return home because they lacked legal documentation.; families were fractured between parents who wanted their children back home but also needed supportAngry mobs killed several hundred people before being brought under control by law enforcement forces
