The Bessemer Arsenal was the first, and most famous of the three arsenals built at Bessemer by General John C. Fremont in 1864. It served as a training ground for Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. The arsenal was also used by Union forces during the war. In 1860, General Fremont began construction on what is now known as the Armory Building at Bessemer. The building housed an artillery range, magazines, and a cavalry school. The armory was completed in 1865 and became operational that year. During World War II, the armory was used to produce earmuffs for military personnel in Alabama and Mississippi. After the war, it fell into disrepair until it was closed in 1954 and remained abandoned until 1984 when it was reopened as a museum called "Bessemer Arsenal Museum." In 2006, it underwent a $30 million renovation which included adding a new visitor center, exhibit hall, interpretive panels about Armament history from before 1860 to today, and additional storage capacity for exhibits. Today's Bessemer Arsenal Museum is one of only a few museums dedicated exclusively to firearms in America.

This production helped contribute to its ranking as one of America's top five cities for job growth during that time period (1960-1990). In recent years, Bessemer has become known for its annual Festival of Arts which dates back to 1984 when it became an event associated with the towns downtown business district (now known as "The Square"). The festival features local artists from acrossAlabama exhibiting their work within four days of each other at several locations throughout downtown including the University Avenue Mall and Clay Street Districts adjacent to The Square
