Bessemer is also the largest municipality in Shelby County by population. The name "Bessemer" comes from Englishman John Bessemer who built a mill there in 1824. The history of Bessemer goes back to 1824 when Englishman John Bessemer built a mill on the river below what is now downtown Bessemer. In 1887, John Fenton bought the mill and made it his main business until his death in 1951. His son, Lamar Fenton, continued this tradition and became mayor of Bessemer from 1971 to 1979 before becoming governor of Alabama in 1982. After Lamar's death, his widow Madeleine took over as mayor and served until her retirement in 2003. Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake serves as acting mayor while Birmingham City Councilwoman Sharon Weston Price fills that role for up to four months during odd-numbered years due to mayoral vacancies caused by then-Governor Robert Bentley's suspension for Ethics violations related to his wife's job as vice president of Etowah Development Company Inc.. The downtown area around the old mill contains many shops and restaurants including Piggly Wiggly which has been open since 1907. This Exit provides easy access not only for neighboring cities such as Birmingham but also Tennessee Valley Authority coal mine workers going intotown on their way home late at night or early morning

Bessemer, Alabama was founded in 1873 by businessman and politician George Bessemer. The town became a center for the aluminum industry, and its fortunes ebbed and flowed with the ever-changing fortunes of aluminum production. In the early 21st century, Bessemer's economy was revived by advances in technology and new demand from China. However, there is still much to learn about this important town in Alabama history. George Washington Bessemer had been born in 1827 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He emigrated to Virginia when he was just sixteen years old, settling in Greensboro before moving to Birmingham in 1851. There he started a small grocery store with his brotheruben John Bessemer and their father Benjamin Fenton. By 1860, George had become a successful businessman with interests that extended beyond the grocery store: he had joined the Alabama House of Representatives (the lower house of parliament) as a Democrat and then served three terms before becoming state treasurer (1861-65). In 1865, George married Anna Maria Swann; they would have six children together. Anna Maria was an accomplished artist who taught at Tuskegee Institute before becoming president of her own art school; she died young without childbearing experience. Thebesers were active parishioners at Stoney Creek Baptist Church where their son John also served as an elder until his death in 1941. In 1871, George adopted four children from a previous marriage: two girls and two boys; these were followed by another four children during the next ten years. Nine out of twelve of George's adoptions took place between 1861-1875 inclusive; it is not clear why only eight out of twelve happened this way but one possibility is that adoption procedures were more lax then they are now because bastardy wasn't considered such a big deal back then. It wasn't until after 1880 that laws changed so that unmarried mothers couldn't be adopted into families anymore although there were still some exceptions made for cases such as those mentioned above where needed family members could be found on short notice or where parents could face social ostracism if they didn't adopt their child themselves due to religious beliefs or moral objections (for example Catholics weren't allowed to adopt).
