Bessemer is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Pensacola Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the Mobile–Auburn Combined Statistical Area. Bessemer was founded by Andrew Jackson in 1821 as a trading post on the Black Warrior River between Mobile and Pensacola. In 1828, Bessemer became one of three towns (the others were Decatur and Jasper) to become a county seat of Escambia County when it was created from parts of DeKalb and Jefferson counties. By 1840, Bessemer had more inhabitants than any other town in Escambia County except for Pensacola. Polk (1845-1849) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1939-1941), Bessemer's growth slowed but never stopped due to World War II' s demand for Steel production which led to increased business opportunities for local businesses such as plastics manufacturer National Textile Corporation which occupied most waterfront buildings until they moved out in the early 1970s when both John Lennon Airport & nearby Naval Air Station Whitley Bay were constructed adjacent to downtown followed by new housing developments including The Landing which opened in 1986 just east of downtowncontaining over 100% African American residents until 2000 when all black residents were forcibly displaced & integrated into white neighborhoods through zoning changes mandated by state legislators prior to the US Census

Bessemer is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Bessemer was founded on December 17, 1818 by Andrew Detroit and his brother David. The first post office in Bessemer was established on January 6, 1819. The name of the town may be derived from a local stream called "Bessemer." Andrew Detroit died in 1826 and his estate passed to his son David. In 1830, David's two sons sold their father's land to John Covington for $5,000 cash. As part of the purchase, John Covington also purchased 350 acres (120 ha) of wetlands near present-day Bessemer for $2 an acre ($/ha). By 1840, the area around present-day Bessemer had become one of the most productive cotton plantations in Alabama. In 1861, during American Civil War Arkansas Confederate general Braxton Bragg made a crossing over Chickasaw River into Alabama to raid Union stores and reported back that he found "a rich cotton field" about three miles (five kilometers) east of present-day Bessemer creek bridge on what is now known as Bragg Road. General James Fenton ordered Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest to march across this field without artillery support and destroy anyUnion installations before returning home; however Forrest instead destroyed a few small buildings before withdrawing under cover of darkness without attacking any targets other than some guardhouses at a nearby mill complex (). With this action Confederate forces achieved an important victory against Union forces which helped them gain control over much of north central Alabama
