The land that now makes up Bessemer was donated by John Troup and his wife to the community in 1829. In 1833, the first store opened in town with J.T. Hartsfield as its manager. A post office was established here in 1835, and for many years it served as the center of trade for all surrounding counties including Marshall and Cullman which added much convenience to life for those living hereabouts. During World War II, work on building radar installation near Hoover Dam required many Libby residents to leave their homes temporarily for extended periods of time; most notably these were women working at Chrysler Corp.'s Libby plant who had access only to public transportation back then (the raised tracks leading into town were still there). Many people also left during WWII due to fear of Japanese attack but returned after hostilities ended...or because they found new opportunities waiting them outside America’s shores! In recent years, much development has took place within city limits with increased job opportunities thanks to technological advancements such as 3D printing technology which has made manufacturing possible again within city limits instead of having it shipped out nationwide or abroad...making Bessemer an even more vibrant community! However, the town's growth stopped when railroads were built through what is now Birmingham, Alabama. In 1907, Bessemer had a population of just over 2,000 people and began developing into a small city. However, in 1954, the city was merged with neighboring Decatur to form Birmingham-Decatur-Bessemer (BDB). Today, Bessemer remains a small community with a population of around 10 residents. Although it has no formal history or government like most cities in America today, Bessemer has been around since 1867 when General Trenton S. Hardin founded it as an independent settlement east of Mobile Bay on land he donated to the state of Alabama. In 1881, hardin's son-in-law Hiram Gentry bought some additional land from him which added to what would become present day downtown Bessemer proper and several other areas surrounding it including West Side Road and East Side Road neighborhoods east of I-5/I-40/US 31; these areas became known as "Gentryville".
