Bessemer, Alabama is the seat of Marshall County, and is located in the Appalachian Mountains. The town was founded by General John C. Breckinridge on December 7, 1875. It became a city in 1907 and incorporated as Bessemer on January 1, 1909. The population of Bessemer was 14,853 at the 2010 census. In 1959, the United States Post Office moved from Gadsden to Bessemer due to population growth in that area. The first holster made in Bessemer was made by Hennepin Manufacturing Company and it consisted of a leather strap with an adjustable buckle used for carrying pistols or revolvers. This holster could be worn either side of the waistband and had a flat bottom to keep weapons off the ground when being carried around. In 1924, Muskegon Holstersmiths began making holsters for handguns using high-quality cowhide leather from Texas A&M University deer farms. This company exported their products through mail order until they were discontinued in 1933 because of financial difficulties caused by World War II.[1] In 1955, American Holster Corporation began manufacturing firearms holsters out of high-quality nylon webbing instead of cowhide leather as part of their line up including service pistols such as Beretta PX4 Storm Rifles and Glock 19 handguns. American Holster also began selling holsters direct to consumers beginning in 1957 under the brand name “Bessemer Crossbow” which featured crossbows mounted onto holsters during hunting season. TheHolster industry experienced rapid growth during this time with firms such as Browning,[2] Colt[3], Ruger[4], Smith & Wesson[5], SIG Sauer[6][7] and Colt’s own M&P Shield becoming major participants.[8][9][10] However, although these companies enjoyed success within their respective industries they were eventually displaced by more recent entrants such as DeSantis Armory who entered into production of 1911 pistols starting in 2007 with their debut model called the DeSantis Pistol Trust Model 61 pistol which incorporates modernized manufacturing processes including 3D printing.[11][12][/13]

Bessemer was founded on November 8, 1835, when two men named George Stephenson and Nicholas Flournoy laid out a town called Bessemer on land donated by James Denny. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Cahaba River between Pensacola and Mobile Bay. In 1841, Bessemer became an incorporated village with a mayor and twelve residents. On December 15, 1859, it became a city with fifty-eight residents. The growth of Bessemer accelerated after the Union victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee in 1865 during the American Civil War. By 1870, Bessemer had reached one thousand citizens and was serving as a transportation hub for cotton farms in southern Alabama. After Reconstruction ended in America following World War II, business stagnation took hold in postwar Birmingham until the arrival of downtown's first African American Mayor, Jack McAllister (1957-1973).
