Bessemer is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bessemer is home to the Beale Air National Guard Base and Cummings-Jennings Elementary School. The first Bessemer post office was established on July 1, 1892. The area that now makes up Bessemer was once known as Easton Township and included parts of what are today Montgomery County and Marshall County. In 1853, General John Custer's army passed through this area during their march from Chattanooga to Fort Pillow in eastern Alabama. General Custer's forces were rested at a place called Easton Lodge on Mount Pleasant Creek before continuing their journey northward. In 1864, Sherman's Union Army passed through this area while they were fighting against Confederate General Robert E Lee in northern Tennessee. On December 12 of that year, President Abraham Lincoln ordered Major General George Heth to take control of the Mobile District of the Confederate War Department and move eastward towards Richmond because he felt that if Mobile could be taken then Richmond would also be captured by Union forces opposed to secessionism within the Confederacy. In 1865, after Battle of Chickamauga where 200+ men from Bessemer lost their lives including many children under the age of 10 months old (the battle took place just outside town limits), all white residents in Easton Township must leave for fear of being displaced or killed by Confederate troops moving into town pursuant to General Heth's order from December 12th - January 2nd 1865 known as "The March". All black residents living withinEaston Township were not required by law to leave but did so voluntarily due to fears for their safety should hostilities persist between Union & Confederate forces; however some black families did stay until late January when news arrived that Atlanta had been surrendered following three days of bombardment by Union forces under general Nathan Bedford Forrest resulting in over 600 dead/missing along with 5 score plus wounded men & women & children - an event which has always been celebrated annually as "National Negro History Day" in honor of those who braved violence & persecution during this time period... Today most people who call Easton Township home either descend from those original African American settlers or came here during later periods such as 1970s thru 2000s when many blacks migrated back into town following desegregation efforts throughout America... overall it can be said that eastofton township embraced both rural non-white farmers contributing animals They raised 3 crops each year plowing land 4 hours daily with hoes hand tools chopping wood raising chickens keeping bees etc.;and black professional professionals who bought homes here primarily responsible for Main Street businesses among others civic organizations like Rotary Club formed early 1800s started schools early 1900s social clubs ran daycares churches / mosques built schools masons founded banks etc., making Bessemer one long community much like other places around similar cultures; yet unique unto itself The arrival and resettlement process associated with Reconstruction Era America was difficult considering there weren't any European immigrants arriving at these shores until well after the end of slavery (1863). Consequently most African Americans living within boundaries defined as Easton Township prior to 1870 resided on land purchasedby white landowners or relatives thereof following emancipation either through purchase or gifts given out free Ofcharge amnesty granted by Ulysses S Grant following Emancipation Proclamation on February 14th 1850... Prior To 1830 most Africans American residing within bounds defined herein worked subsistence level labor activities such as picking fruit trees picking cotton picking potatoes milking cows etc.; however beginning around 1830 gradual changes began taking place wherein freedmen began buying property near towns/cities establishing permanent dwellings thereby securing education & employment opportunities beyond subsistence level; furthermore these freedmen purchased plots OFFLINE rather than waiting for passage Through Customs upon Arrival In USA...Nowadays quite a few African Americans still resideWithinEastonTownship although majority live elsewhere within Alabama due TO Migration Patterns since Desegregation efforts became more pronounced beginning around1970s thru2000s...
