Bessemer is a town in Checkered Flag County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. The name Bessemer is first mentioned in 1814 when Captain John Smith of Pensacola chartered the "Alaska" and sailed to this location with traders. The first guns used in battle were muskets which were muzzle-loading devices that fired balls instead of shot. When new technology advanced such as cannons and pistols, these weapons became effective against other troops and animals because they could now kill with one shot. In 1819 Congress passed an act that allowed states to regulate handguns for militia purposes and established a national gunsmiths association known as the National Rifle Association (NRA). This act also made it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess any firearm without a license from a federal firearms dealer. In 1911 Bessemer incorporated as a city and its police department was organized. In 1925 it annexed neighboring Mobile City which had been founded in 1833 by General Andrew Jackson during his military campaigns against Native Americans. That year Mobile City’s incorporation also created municipal court jurisdiction within Bessemer limits while Mobile City continued to operate its own police department outside of those bounds. The population of Bessemer peaked at 10,000 in 1930 but began declining rapidly due to various factors including World War II; immigration; black migration into central Alabama; and farming practices changes related to horticulture which led to less need for Agricultural land around town than before. By 1970 the population had fallen below 6,000 again due mainly to loss of jobs on account of automation/offshore outsourcing throughout much of America combined with high levels of unemployment across all industries throughout most parts of the world during that time period resulting in increased demand for anything available locally or imported from other parts of the world:This combination resulted in once again LOW crime rates despite large areas having no jobs & social disintegration following mass poverty & lack thereof during this time period leading many people leaving town looking for opportunities elsewhere

Heading downriver from Pensacola, Florida on his way to join General Jackson's army invading Mississippi that same year, Clark built his first cabin there on the banks of the Black Warrior River. In 1811 Alexander Cobb opened a store in what is now downtown Bessemer and began trading with Native Americans along the riverbanks outside of town limits today. In 1815 he married Sarah Hawkins and founded what would become known as Cobb & Hawkins Store which still stands today across from First Baptist Church off US 11/12 north of town limits just east of where Interstate 65 intersects with US 21 (the old alignment). In 1819 David Wilkinson built Wilkinson House near where current day Boulevard d'Albany meets US 11/12 (now part of Veterans Memorial Parkway) – this house later served as home to Georgia Barnett who played an important role in helping organize both Confederate forces during the American Civil War and later became oneof America's most well-known women politicians. John Dickey started a shoe manufacturing business here in 1827 which soon grew into what is now JDS Shoes Incorporated; one of America’s largest footwear companies until it went bankrupt in 2000 following years of heavy industry consolidation across North America. Today Best Buy Corporation operates JDS Shoes stores throughout South Korea through its KEB Corp subsidiary while original founder Dickey remains owner emeritus and chairman emeritus.. During Reconstruction period (1865-1877), many African Americans moved into Bessemer joining freedmen brought over by Union Genl Andrew Johnson following the Ulysses S Grant Administration's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery within the Confederacy.. After Reconstruction many black men like Booker T Washington began working their farmssteads around town while others worked for local businesses such as Ladd Chevrolet or Henderson Manufacturing Company until new opportunities were availablefinanced by Northern capitalists.. Downtown business district gradually declined during these years with some relocation to outlying areas such as Patton Place then northward along I-565 toward Montgomery County.. By 1930 only 1/3 of downtown employed peoplelatorists while downtown commerce had essentially disappeared leaving much vacant real estate resulting 1/2 centuryLater when retail development recommenced downtown property values soared ..Today downtown area has significant commercial activity including several high end retailers anchored by Best Buy Corporation
