The Bessemer Arsenal was a military arsenal located in Bessemer, Alabama that began operations in 1853. The site was donated by Augustus C. Moore, who had relocated from Mobile to Bessemer in 1849. The armory became operational and underwent a modernization project in 1865 which included the construction of a new complex including a rifle range and an artillery battery. In 1916, the Arsenal was closed due to World War I munitions shortages and it reopened as the Ford Arms Company plant. In 1945, the company was absorbed into the Bradley Corporation and its assets were placed within the Department of Defense National Security Complex at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In 1972, Ford bowed out of firearms production and allArsenal products were transferred to Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc., which remains today one of America's leading firearm manufacturers.
