Bessemer, Alabama is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 20,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Bessemer was founded in 1871 by white men from Georgia and Virginia as a town on the east bank of the Mobile River. In 1879, it became a borough and in 1907 it became an incorporated city. The current name for Bessemer comes from English settlers John Neely Lewis and James Caldwell Bessemer who named their river's bed "Bessemer" after their home countryman Sir Edmund Burton (1685-1751). Hutchinson when they were attacked by a group of men from Bessemer. The fight continued outside until one man, John Dickey, finally shot and killed two of the attackers with a rifle butt. This event is commonly cited as the beginning of gunfighting in Alabama

Bessemer was founded on December 12, 1875 by John Bessemer and his family after their land west of Mobile was opened to settlement by the US government as part of the Indian Territory Purchase. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to Mobile and its connections with steamboats docking at the newly built Mobile Bay Bridge. By 1900, Bessemer had become one of Alabama's largest cities with a population of 508 people. In 1913, during World War I, Bessemer became an important munitions manufacturing center for Allied forces when it became known as "the Arsenal of America" and produced shells for both European and American artillery. After the war ended, Bessemer experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Mobile until white flight began in the early 1960s. Today, Bessemer is known for itsowntown business district which includes several large shopping malls as well as its many cultural attractions including art galleries, music venues, and professional sports teams.

Bessemer, Alabama is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,992 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. The town was founded in 1837 by Nicholas Bessemer and named for him. Bessemer Machine Works was founded here in 1902 by George W. Stephenson and named for him as well. In 1916, the plant became part of International Harvester Company and continued to produce tractors until it closed in 1997. Today, only a museum remains dedicated to Bessemer products with an exhibit on the history of machine tools in Tuscaloosa County.
The town of Bessemer was founded in 1819 by General John C. Bessemer and his family, who had emigrated from England. The original settlers were white, but the community became colored after a change in the Alabama Constitution in 1868 made it illegal for white people to own property within city limits. The town was renamed black Belt in 1901 after the area Aroostook County lay east of it. It is now part of Mobile County.
